From Switzerland you might consider flying to Istanbul. I know that Turkish Air has flights from Zurich and Geneva and maybe more. I'm sure there are other carriers. That will save you a lot of time actually getting to Turkey. In terms of transportation within Turkey, the train system is not the best. However, there are lots of van and bus options. I've typically flown to a destination and rented a car or just rented a car and driven. That saves time and adds flexability, but incurs greater costs. I've always carried the Lonely Planet guide when I've been in Turkey. It will give you a good idea of how to get around to the places you want to see. It will also help you figure out where you might want to go. I typically recommend Istanbul, the western coast, and Cappadocia to first time visitors. Have fun.

You should first decide what type of locations you are interested in visiting. Turkey can offer you beaches, hiking, landscapes, historical sites, etc. Once you have narrowed your focus, you can then choose the areas that meet your interests. Keep in mind that Turkey is a large country, and the logistics of moving from one place to another will eat into your itinerary. With twelve days, you have time for Istanbul and two or three other areas (possibly more if the sites are near each other). Take a look at the Frommer's website for ideas.

12 days may be just enough if you can move quickly. fly into IST, or Ankara (visit capatocia, then fly back to IST). From IST you want to fly to Ismir so you can train to selcuk see efes. From there you can bus to pamukkale, and further out to say bodrum. If you don't fly but take the long distance bus, then you need to take 1 day out, so that really leave you about 9 days, which is just about enough to see IST plus 1 or 2 other cities. In that case you may have to drop either capadocia, or stop at selcuk and turn back and miss pamukkale. If you think you'll go to turkey again then that's not a big deal, but otherwise you want to just fly. Local commute is very easy. there is plenty domos can get you anywhere very cheaply. As long as you get your big piece of itenaries figured out you'll be fine.

Hello Amie,
12 days is a good amount of time. You can get around Turkey most efficiently by plane and bus. You can rent a car if you like but driving in Istanbul is difficult. I would recommend: Ephesus, a blue cruise, Capadoccia and of course Istanbul.

Your might want to go to RS 14 day Turkey Tour and see its daily itinerary for suggestions on where to go. I took that tour last summer and was very pleased.
