We are planning a Christmas Market Cruise on the Danube in December. Our final port is Budapest and we plan to extend our stay there by one night. Any suggestions for a small, friendly hotel in the city?
@Kathy- Well, it could have been some sort of promotion, but I can't recall. You are right, that is a steep rate hike! We were there in late June, so pretty much the high season.
There are many options, depending on your budget. The Hotel K&K Opera is conveniently located and has reasonable rates which can include a great breakfast buffet. The hotel is behind the opera, right off of the M1 Metro line, and is very nice/ smallish.
Thanks so much for your reply! I'll check it out.
Ouch! 213 euro for a single is certainly out of MY budget. I'll be in Budapest in November, and will probably try for a room here: http://leopanzio.hu/ I can't really recommend the hotel I stayed at last time (the Matyas), and the time before I stayed in a sobe - a private room.
Kathy, wow, if it is that much then it went up considerably since we were there in 2008. It was 120 Euro then!
Mike - that's a massive jump in just three years, isn't it? Were you there off season? Or maybe they've done some renovations? The Leo Panzio's website says (ignoring an anniversary special) 79/99 euro single/double in high season and 49/76 in the low, which is what's listed in my Lonely Planet Hungary, copyright 2009.
We just returned from Budapest. We stayed at Hotel Andrassy. I don't remember the rate, but it included a buffet breakfast. We were quite happy there and would stay again. Ashley
We stayed 3 nights at the Arte' hotel on the Buda side right on the river. The hotel was decorated by an avant garde American artist whose name I can't remember, but it is stunning and modern in a cool groovy European way and each room has a crow placed somewhere interesting. The location is perfect for the metro, walking, bridges and shopping. We loved it. By the way, it was very reasonable.
We stayed with "your Hungarian aunt and uncle, Maria and Istvan" in one of their apartments. They were simply very helpful. The apartment was 80 E per night for up to 6 people. The location was great, about 100 yds from the subway, 20 yds from a supermarket, around the corner from the Ali Baba internet cafe. Maria and Istvan provided a spot for the car (2000 HUF, 10 USD per night). I recommend them highly. We got opera tickets at 5:45, returned to the house to change, and made the 7 PM curtain with 10 min to spare. DO NOT omit the Memorial Park or the House of Terror.
@Paul - do the aunt and uncle have a website?
Here is their email: [email protected] I found them thru the Rick Steves book. If you write them, mention "Paul from the Harfsa Baptist church" and he will certainly remember that.
My wife and I just got back and stayed at the Maverick Hostel. Beautiful apartment-style room with ensuite. 5 minute walk from the main sights in Pest.
I stayed at the Mercure Museum Hotel in Budapest. About 20 minutes' walk to the center of Pest (much less by tram or metro of course). I booked thru the hotel website and got a good price - with a nice breakfast buffet. Clean, pleasant, very helpful staff, free internet and spa.
