My husband and I are flying into Athens from Canada in September and plan to stay 2 nights before taking the ferry to Sifnos. Any ideas of what area we should be looking at? We will not have a car.
The most central areas are in the Plaka and Monastiraki districts, near to Syntagma Square. There are lots of good, inexpensive hotels in these areas including the Pan, Arethusa, Amazon, Ormos, Hermes, Metropolis, Acropolis View, Plaka, Cecil, Attalos, Tempi and Central Hotels. Stay away from the Omonia Square area, that's where the prostitutes and junkies hang out at night.
Thanks for the suggestions. Do you know if we can take the metro or other public transportation to those hotels from the airport and to the ferry?
Yes, both the X95 Airport Express Bus and the Blue Line Airport Metro stop at Syntagma Square and the Metro also stops at the Monastiraki Station, the next stop after Syntagma, which is the station you go to when catching the Green Line train going to Piraeus for the ferry. The bus runs 24/7/365 every 20-30 minutes from outside door 5 on the Arrivals level. There's a ticket booth out there as well. The Metro runs every 30-40 minutes between 5:30am and Midnight. Walk outside and cross over the Skyway to get to the Metro station.
If you decide to book the Attalos Hotel, you can save 10% by booking it through the Matt Barrett site -- http://www.greektravel.com/
Thanks again for the great info. I'll check out the hotels you suggested and book one of them.
I found his website and it looks like there is great information. Thank you.
Consider the Acropolis View Hotel. Easy walk to the Acropolis site and the Plaka. On a quiet street. Have stayed there eight times. Request an Acropolis view room at the front on a higher floor. Not that far from the "Acropoli" metro stop which is an easy connection for the direct train from/to the airport. They will arrange a cab to take you directly to your ferry to Sifnos.
