Where you stay depends a bit on what you want to see. If you're looking in Sultanahmet, I like the Empress Zoe or Blue House. Both are well run and right next to the major sites. If you want something in the Taksim Square area, there is a Hilton over there. I don't know any of the smaller local hotels in that part of town. Good luck.

Hotel Sultan Hill just below the Blue Mosque was terrific for our family last summer.

Hotel Sultan Hill - stayed there last summer and will return there next time we are in Istanbul. Discount if reserved using RS Istanbul Guide Book and then showing it at check-in at least that was the case last summer.
