Accomadation in Hvar Help please

My husband and I are planning to visit Croatia for about 19 days in July/August 2011. We will start in Split and then would like to visit Hvar for about 5 days before continuing on to Dubronvik for 7 days. We are young adventurous 60/70 Australians who enjoy independent travel by public transport. I am seeking clean and comfortable accomadation in or very near the old town in Hvar. Either hotel or apartment. My husband is 75 and more than 20 stairs to the room/apartment is a problem as is a very steep hill. I have been searching and searching and can not find anything suitable. Our budget is up to 140 euro though prefer not to spend that much. I would really be upset if we missed visiting Hvar because we can not find accomadation. We enjoy being somewhere where we can easily wander to a choice of resturants in the evening.

What you're looking for is difficult to find in Hvar. It's a very hilly, steep island. We were there in 2006 and stayed in a lovely apartment. But what had been advertised as a 15 minute walk to town turned out to be about 30 minutes, including a long flight of stairs. I had torn some cartilage in my knee shortly before we left home, so we looked for something closer to the main part of town. One possibility is the Delfin hotel. If you check on Trip Advisor, it gets mixed reviews. Another is the Riva, also with mixed reviews. We opted to stay where we were. You might want to consider visiting another island. The lovely island of Vis is easily accessible from Split. It's much smaller, quiet, not so expensive or busy as Hvar. There are no hills to climb, just gentle walks along the harbor, and a small (but good) choice of restaurants. Or Korcula might be even better. This is a beautiful island, where I'm sure you could find suitable accommodations within walking distance from restaurants and the old town. I know how it feels to get your heart set on a specific place, but I think you would enjoy Vis or Korcula as much as Hvar, and both are more accessible. Whatever you decide, I hope you have a wonderful trip.

Hi Thank you for the advice. I will read more about the other islands but we did choose Hvar because there seemed to be more to see and do on that island. We arent ones for sitting on the beach. I heard that we could visit a number of other islands on day trips from Hvar. I just thougt that if we visited an island we could take a bit of a breather and not have to be up so early etc.
Also we would see a different way of life to life in the cities. I will check out the hotels you mention.

We stayed in a sobe in Hvar for about $30 per night in May 2009 that was a 10 minute walk from downtown. I'm sure you can find something for under 140 Euros there- have you checked tripadvisor? You might want to consider adding Korcula and spending a day less in Hvar and 2 days less in Dubrovnik. We took the ferry from Dubrovnik to Hvar and then to Split, but it stopped in Korcula between Dubrovnik and Hvar. The ferry should be a very nice way to see scenery without having to walk around much.

Hi I have been over and over and over trip advisor. I have contacted a number of apartments and either they have too many stairs, are more than 180euro or are too far away or on steep hills.
Doesnt seem to be any hotels that are interested in helping us with the luggage either. When you say you stayed in a sobe I would be interested to hear what that is. Thanks

We learned about sobes from the Rick Steves guide book. They are rooms that people rent in their homes. It is part of a government regulated program. Anyone who has a sobe will have a square blue sign on the front of their home with the word "sobe" and a bed logo. They don't work on reservations- you just knock on the door, indicate how many nights you want to stay, and they let you know how much they will charge. We typically paid $30 a night for a private double room with our own bathroom. We traveled in late May and I believe that August in particular in high season in August and prices would be higher, but nowhere near 140 euros for a sobe. It might be harder to look around for a sobe given the luggage and physical limitations. The one we stayed at in Hvar was the only one we called ahead on- it was either one in Rick Steves or in Lonely Planet. It was one of the few where the owner spoke English and he picked us up at the bus drop-off point (there is a bus from the ferry port into the town of Hvar). You could check those guidebooks and try calling in advance.

One more idea for you: you might try to find a travel agency on Hvar that could help you find suitable accommodations. I would think you could find some agencies listed in a Croatia guide book; we've given all of ours away so I can't help with this. I would not recommend showing up on Hvar without a reservation in August; there may be sobes (apartments) available, but they will almost certainly involve many steps and/or hills to climb.

Hi Thank you for your advice. I wouldnt feel comfortable arriving anywhere in August without a booking I dont think. I have looked at the hotels recommended Riva, Amphora, Bodul, Adriana and from what I can see they are all owned by the same group and the prices seem to start around 173euro so that is out. I am still searching and have googled travel agencies but cant seem to come up with any in Hvar, some in Dubronvik. There are a number of apartments listed on Trip Advisor and I have contacted any that seem suitable but at the moment have had only one reply with an apartment that would be suitable but at 160euro. I will keep on looking and asking on forums to see if anything shows up. Until I can find accomadation for this part of the trip, I can't go on and plan the rest of the 12 weeks, because if Hvar isnt a possibility then going to Croatia for just 12 or so days makes the airfares very expensive, so we may have to drop Croatia off the trip, which would be a real shame. I thought about the other islands like Brac etc but they seem to be mainly for beach lovers which we arent into when we travel as we live just near the beach in Australia.
The island with the walled city would be interesting but dont think we would want to spend 5 nights there and we usually dont like to pack up and move on after 2 nights as it just becomes too exhausting. So I am still open to suggestions please The other option is to take a cruise from Venice for 7/9days to Croatia but again I am having trouble finding anything on line leaving late August/early September. The other

I hope you don't give up a visit to Croatia because of problems finding accommodations in Hvar. It's a beautiful country and I think you would enjoy seeing it. And Hvar was frankly not our favorite of all the places we visited! I have a couple more ideas for you: 1. The island with the walled city is Korcula. It's really a beautiful island, much more walkable than Hvar. I think you could enjoy 3 or 4 days there. There's a hotel adjacent to the old town that would be a perfect place to stay. 2. Instead of staying right in Dubrovnik, I would recommend you stay in the little village of Cavtat, about 10 minutes away by bus. Dubrovnik is also full of stairs and hills, and takes lots of climbing to get to many hotels. You can easily take buses or boats from Cavtat into Dubrovnik for sightseeing. The boat especially makes it easy, with little unnecessary walking. There are places you can stay in Cavtat that are right in the town and many restaurants to walk to. Look on Trip Advisor for the reviews for Villa Pattiere and Villa Andros, for two possibilities. From Cavtat, you can also take other day trips -- you can go to Montenegro, which is amazingly beautiful. And Mostar. Korcula and Cavtat are beautiful, relaxing and peaceful places, and I think they would be a highlight of your trip.

Hi Could you tell me the name of the hotel near the old town in Korcula. I have checked trip advisor but cant get a clear picture of anything being near the old town. I will certainly look at your suggestions

It's called Hotel Korcula. We didn't stay here, but we did spend some lazy hours on their lovely shaded terrace, sipping wine and watching the ships sail by. Unfortunately I just looked it up on Trip Advisor and the reviews are not good, so I'm sorry about getting your hopes up. However, Korcula has several very well-reviewed hotels and B&Bs so I am sure you will find someplace you would enjoy. Good luck in your search!

Hi I have looked at the two in Cavtat you recommended but they are even more expensive than the apartments that I was looking at in Dubronvik. About 187euro a night so that is about $270 au. Our budget is a maximum of 200Au as we will be travelling for 12 weeks. Thanks again, I will go back and read more of the reviews for Korcula
