A visit to Prague - PLEASE help :-)

We live in San Francisco. Is there a cheaper was to get to Prague that a flight from SF?... like a plane to___?, and then a train to Prague?
Comparatively, is it still less expensive then Western Europe. (Idea of cheaper places to stsy) food (good?), etc., and places to see on day trips from Prague.

Whomever answers, thank you so much.

Frankfurt perhaps, then train and rail pass. Lots of options out there.

I would also suggest flying into Frankfurt.

Before you decide to fly into Frankfurt and take separate transportation from there, check the train schedule for time and cost. We're going to Prague at the beginning of September and the cost of a non-stop flight to Frankfurt was inexpensive but transportation (flight or train) to Prague was not feasible.

For our dates, flying into London and then on to Prague on a separate ticket was much cheaper than buying anything directly into Prague. We have a flight to London on United and then a flight to Prague on BA. There is over a 4 hour layover but we saved a lot of money. The last time we did this, BA was really great when our flight from SFO was late, so I have no reservations about doing it again. Granted, we do have travel insurance for medical the other coverage was not much more, so we are covered for missed connections.

For other dates, we found that there were connections through Frankfurt as one ticket (check Kayak and United using Star Alliance options) as well as through London that were cheaper than booking separately. Also, I have found that sometimes BA tickets are cheaper on the American Airlines website. Another option is checking where easyJet has connections to Prague and see if you can get a coordinating flight.

As for your question about cost, I can't answer for Prague as this is my first trip. In all my other travels, I have found that Greece and Spain were inexpensive compared to Italy, France, UK, etc...

We were in Prague in 2007. Beer was $1 pretty much everywhere, even in clubs. Need I say more? ;) We took a day trip to Theresienstadt/Terezin Concentration Camp while we were there. It was about 1-1 1/2 hours away. But there are a few other day trips one can take from Prague. Any tour guide book will tell you which they are. I can't remember what they are off the top of my head... Prague was definitely cheaper than Germany. I'm not sure when Czech will go to Euros, but until then, it will probably be fairly inexpensive compared to most of Western Europe...

Jay,

I will be going to eastern Europe in the second week of September. Two weeks ago I bought a RT ticket SFO to Munich on Delta for $580. I will be taking a train from Munich to Prague and start my adventure. Check Delta to see if they have those deals. Good Luck.

I'd do SFO to London and take British Air to Prague (which I am doing next month). A great, centrally located hotel is hotel U Tri Bubnu, I highly recommned it(http://www.utribubnu.cz/). The Czech republic won't switch to Euros until 2012, so now is a good time to travel there. If you have time, visit Karstein Castle and village, a 30' train ride from Prague. Rick also has an exceptional guide Sarka Kacabova (http://www.prague-guide.info/) whom we have used before and will again on this trip.

One way to do this is consider flying into Frankfort and taking a night train to Prague. We did this and it worked out very well for us. A chearper alternative as well because you are paying for your hotel AND transportation all in one. We were there right after the horrible flood that hit the city a month earlier, though.
