A Quiet side of Crete

We are going to Crete in August to meet up with our Marine son on leave from Afghanistan. I know it will be the busiest, hottest time to be there, but the timing is out of our control. Is there anyplace that has nice beaches, restaurants, and historical sites that is a little less crowded? We can't head inland, because he really wants to see the water (coming from the desert!). Thanks!

Cindy, you have posed a BIG challenge, and people will really want to help. I would suggest you go where the most help is available Most people on this forum have done limited traveling in Greece. Trip Advisor Greece Forum has contributors who actually live in Crete or who have gone there annually for years; also Thorn Tree Greece Forum. I say, go to those sites with your question and please please give EXACT dates. It matters. Greece's biggest summer holiday is Aug. 15, that affects hotels, transport etc etc. Another example I love Falassarna Beach but on first weekend of August, there's a huuuuuge beach party that draws partyers from all over Europe. NOTE: if you're going after Aug 19, things get markedly better, because families must leave to get kids in school. Another tip: at ANY time of summer, avoid the beach strip from Heraklion running about 30+ miles east, especially Malia. Package-tour hell. You may do better on West & Southwest coasts. Here's a great map to look at when weighing suggestions has all roads/towns, & click & it gets huuuuge http://www.explorecrete.com/crete-maps/images/Crete-eot.png

Cindy, One possibility that comes to mind is Plakias. As you'll see from the website, some of the beaches are incredible! The website seems a bit "dated" but will give you an idea. There's a really nice Hostel there, but I suspect that wouldn't be your first choice for lodgings. You could also check This Website if you have any questions. Hope you have a wonderful time with your Son!

Thanks for the suggestions! I will check all of them out, and however hot and crowded, we will be in a beautiful place with our son, so it will be awesome!

Plakias or Sfakia would probably be what you're looking for. Quiet, but good restaurants and scenery.

Consider: Palace of Knossos. The collection of the Archaeological Museum in Iraklion is outstanding. Drive to Paleokastro on the east end for a base. Resort developments like Ag. Nik. on the way should be avoided. Good beaches at Vai, Itanos, Xerokampos, and Kato Zakros with Minoan palace site.
