9 hour layover in Athens

I am planning to go from Cairo to Tel Aviv and there is an option for me to get there via Athens. There is a 9 hour layover involved though which is from 4pm to 1 am. I can handle the late night flight as I work shift work and can adapt to strange hours, but would 9 hours be enough to leave the airport and see the Parthenon?

It depends on when you are there. In the summer season it stays open until 7pm but this time of year it closes at 6pm, and sometimes as early as 2:30pm.

If the Parthenon is closed you'd still have enough time to have a look around the Plaka district. Take the Airport Metro (Blue Line) to the Monastiraki Metro Station for €6 each way.

I'm not certain if you have time to head into Athens, but if you're willing to potentially stay nine hours inside the airport, perhaps you should take the direct 15 hour bus ride from Cairo to Tel Aviv. You'll pass over the Suez Canal, and drive across the Sinai Desert. The scenery is something out of Lawrence of Arabia.
