We are considering a trip to Turkey in late May, early June. We would basically see the locations on the RS tour, but do it on our own or with a local tour guide part of the time. Does anyone have any general advice? Is there a guide book other than LP that anyone recommends? We will have our four children, ages from 11 to 21, with us.
Rick has his own guidebook for Turkey. Also, next month he will release his first edition city guide for Istanbul
Rick doesn't have a guidebook for Turkey. However an Istanbul city guide will be available in June.
We're looking into Turkey also. I've been finding Frommer's to have quite a lot of good information.
There is no really good guidebook for Turkey. I thought DK contained valuable information. The public ferry up the Bosphorous was really fun and the price was only 5 Lira.
Check out www.tripadvisor.com. It has great information on Turkey.
I went on the RS tour last fall and highly recommend the overnight train from Istanbul to Ankara.
A former guidebook writer for Lonely Planet has a superb website and graffiti-wall type section with all kinds of valuable information about Turkey. It's www.turkeytravelplanner.com. We used it extensively before a month long trip last year which we planned ourselves and it was invaluable.
