My wife and I are visiting Berlin, Prague and Budapest end of this summer. Between these three cities, which one do you recommend we should hire a local guide in addition to Rick's book and which one we can just follow Rick's?

Neither and all. I do not think that a self guided tour will ever compare with a private guide. A private guide adds an interactive richness that you cannot get with the printed word. Can you get by with a sg tour? Of course you can. But we always try to find tours offered tbrough the local TI or recommended guides. An in-between solution is audio guides.

We hired private guides for our first day in both Prague and Budapest, and in each case it enhanced our visit tremendously. A printed guidebook just can't compete with the experience of interacting for a few hours with a knowledgable local. You learn so much more with a guide.
