I plan to take the following trip in early October. I only have time to visit Vienna or Salzburg. The rest of the cities are FIRM choices. Any suggestions between the 2 cities?
Prague (3 days)
Vienna or Salzburg (2 days)
Hallstatt (1.5 to 2 days)
Munich w/day trip to Neuschwanstein Castle (3 days)
Rome (3 days)
Greece (5 days)
Been to both - enjoyed both. Returning, I would probably pick Vienna as there is a lot more to see and do there, though we occupied 3 days easily in Salzburg.
I too have been to both. I think I'd lean toward Vienna. Why don't you look and see what concerts will be on when you are there? I suspect that you'll find more in Vienna at that time of year. Vienna is a wonderful city and an interesting contrast to Prague.

I too would say Vienna. However, given the other places you are planning on visiting, Salzburg may be the better choice from a transportation perspective since it is closer to Munich, Halstatt, etc. This should save you time and money.
Salzburg is convenient to both Munich and Hallstatt. Vienna is great and deserves more than two days. Salzburg can be visited nicely in two days.
I'd go with Salzburg, one of the most beautiful little cities anywhere.
