Warning! Baggage theft at Frankfurt am Main airport

On July 16, I arrived 3 1/2 hours before my Luftansa flight from Frankfurt am Main to Orlando, Florida. I checked two bags both without locks and watched the Luftansa clerk place the white tags on both cases. One bag was a 22in expandable roller. The other was a flat bag that makes into a duffle. When I picked up the bags in Orlando, both bags were missing the white baggage tags. Several items were missing from the duffle bag including my address book. None of the items were expensive. Before unpacking, I was listening to TV rather than watching, I heard something about a problem at airport baggage where the tags were being removed so that they could not be traced. Later I realized that it had happened to me. Other than complaining to Luftansa and getting the word out, I don't know what else can be doen to stop this kind of crime.

The roller case had 2 compresion bags on top, and I am guessing that someone did not have time to dig into the case.

Ann, that sucks! I'm so sorry that happened to you. Thanks for giving us a heads up.

Thanks! It is not the amount that was stolen, but one feels violated. A travel agent sent me a note that the news I heard about was theft at JFK=tags were removed.

Hi Ann:

That is too bad.

I have taken to using the green plastic "locks". To get them off they have to be twisted then removed.

The theory is that a thief will go for the case with no lock rather than have to twist off and remove a lock. I have not had anything stolen, but am not sure that is due to the lock. However if I use them then I know immediately if my case has been opened.

In my case it is the TSA that opens my case almost every time I fly. It may be time to get a new one.

I hope the next time you travel you have better luck.

To expand on Barbara's post, you need to get TSA approved locks. We have used these little locks for years, but had to replace them all once the TSA started to look randomly in bags going through check-in. These locks can be opened with a special key the TSA agents have, then closed again.

Unfortunately, twice they apparently could not open them and instead broke the zipper on my backpack/suitcase instead. On one occasion, stuff in my side pocked spilled out all over the luggage conveyor as bags were coming down the shute.

They are really unaccountable for any damage, we found out. The airline never willingly will compensate you for any damage incurred by their baggage handlers as well unless you really raise the roof with them. This also occurred twice, both times in Houston and with Continental Airlines, who could care less about it.

Yes, I will return to using the TSA locks.

I feel that if we do not share notices of problems like this, it gives the "crooks" space to keep doing it.

I contacted Lufthansa , my travel agent, both airports, and every blog I could think of. Pass the note on if you can. Knowledge is helpful in preventing crime.

Thanks you all!

Ann: Wondered if you've noticing your posts are in triplicate? Not sure why, but was wondering if you could take a few seconds to Delete the extra posts?

Just click the Delete button that you see under your name.

We've had double posters before but you're the first triple poster. Now that's a sticky enter button.

You can not use a TSA lock on an international flight. Well you can but the custom's people at the other end may bust your lock (all you out there this may have changed since last Fall - please post if so). Rick sells one time use plastic cable tie type locks (like 20 to a package). I use them to secure my day pack when traveling on the train or bus on longer journeys where I might find being "ever vigilant" a bit of a chore. They're so cheap I might use 2 in one day. Two or three safety pins would probably work as well (and indeed that is what I do on a normal walking around day). All you need to do is cause a delay.

Marie -

We used them in May of this year going to London and leaving from Paris and there was no issue at either airport regarding the locks. They tend to be a bit rougher in the U.S. with them, however.
