Have driven in Croatia and the motorways are very good. Via Michelin estimates about 7.5 hours to drive from Budapest to Split, but their driving times are usually a little optimistic and don't include rest stops. Train takes 12-16 hours. You can check schedules on the Deutsche Bahn website. Some solutions include a night train from Zagreb to Split. If you decide on the train, consider an overnight in Zagreb. It's well worth a short visit and breaks up the long trip.
