We are thinking about vacationing in Klaipeda, Lithuania this summer. I am interested in hearing from others who have traveled there. Are there cities or towns you can also recommend in the area?

We are in Klaipeda right now visiting our kids who work at LCC International University. We've been here 5 times and although we usually spend most of time with family there are plenty of things to do. We've visited, the Spit with the dolphin show, sea museum and great beaches, Palanga, a very unique (for N. Americans) beach town. The hill of crosses, the bird counting station (started in the 1920's) are all within 50-60 miles. It is certainly off the beaten path but we still enjoy coming to Lithuania. Vilnius, the capital's medieval old city survived and is very interesting. Vilnius is the cultural capital for 2009 and is celebrating its 1000 year old history.
