Need a some input here...my husband and I will be traveling in early December with our 4 year old and a 76 year old to Munich. We have two possible routes to take and not sure which to do. Trip A, rent a car in Munich: 2 nights Munich, 4 nights Obertraun, 4 nights Vienna, 2 nights Salzburg, 1 night at Munich Airport. Trip B: 2 nights Munich, train to Prague and stay 3 nights, train to Vienna and stay 3 nights, rent a car in Vienna and drive to Obertraun for 4 nights, drive to Munich Airport for 1 night. Finding it not much less expensive to rent from Vienna for 5 days than to rent from Munich for 13 days. Difficult to find a vehicle to hold our luggage as well (4 bags + carry-ons). Option B has a lot of lugging our own bags through train stations which gives me some pause given who will be traveling with us, but Prague would be so cool. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks!
Your options basically come down to a choice between Prague and Salzburg. Both are great, but if I were traveling with a 4-year-old and a 76-year-old, I think I'd lean toward Salzburg - simply because I think the amount of walking would be quite a bit less. And you shouldn't have difficulty finding an adequately-sized car for 4 plus luggage. Check autoeurope.com
i think you're better off renting a car the whole way. the rental agency will find you a car (i rented station wagon before in france so they have them), but you may need to check about taking cars into czech because of higher rate of breakins.
I'd do trip A. If possible I would try to make it to Obertraun when you arrive so you save 1 changing of hotel. This way you would end with 3 nights in Munich.
