I'm planning a trip to Istanbul with two friends for December (we're all young women). How safe is Istanbul for young American women, and how easy is it to get around without knowing the language?

Three female friends of mine paid a visit to Istanbul last year. Their assessment? Perfectly safe, and nearly as secular as the rest of Europe. They said they experienced harassment in Italy and Spain, but not in Istanbul. Supposedly, though, certain rural areas of Turkey are a bit more worrisome, although I've never talked to anyone who has experienced problems.
