The Nexus Experiment.

So a bit over a month ago (early March 2023) I was reading a post on here and got to wondering about “Nexus”. So I went to the site and red up on it. It looked like a good deal, as it is pretty cheep. So I was boarded and curious to see what info the wanted so I filled out the application and it was only $50 or so but it said it could take about 14 months,
14 MONTHS? what the heck is the point of THAT? If you realky can use the program will you still need it in 14.months? And if you need it now you next year and two months are going yo suck. In theory If I signed up in March of 23 it would be May of 24 before I got it. That seamed hard to believe but it was what Nexus own web page said and I guess you have to work through both the US and Canada. So being board I figured what the heck and paid the $50 (or so) . After all i a, considering a couple trips into Canada next year so it may be of some use.
So this is my post about that and if/when I have updates I will try to dig this out and update it. But it has been in pending for almost 6 weeks no so.. I am beginning to believe the 14 months,

Well we will see

The wait may be long, but it sure helps with security line up and entry into either country. It should be good for 5 years and renewal does not require an interview. At the second renewal, however, it does.
As a Canadian, I always send up a little word of thanks when my transits and entries only take the 2 or 3 minutes to complete the paperwork instead of the long waits in line.
I am also not partial to security lines held up by folks who can't get it together with the bins, electronics, belts, etc. We don't have any other pre screen or priority program, so happy to have this card to avoid the worst.

I also am a Nexus card holder. Love it. The wait for Nexus is incredibly long right now, but it will be worth it. My sister just applied for her second renewal. She was informed of the current backlog and told that they were automatically adding a year of validity to her current card to allow for the processing time.

The “choke point” for Nexus is the interview which is done with both Canadian and US border agents. There are limited appointment times available.

The first time you approach the border and see a 1-2 hour back up traffic jam of cars and you sail right up to the agent in the Nexus Lane, you will know it is worth any wait for the card.

And upon approval for NEXUS you also get Global Entry and TSA Precheck benefits.

Hmmm, when I applied for Global Entry, it was $100 and took me almost 15 months to complete.

I don’t know where the Nexus enrollment center in Michigan is located. When we applied in Washington there was a center south of Seattle that was very convenient. But the wait to get an interview appointment after the conditional approval was very long. we eventually got one and arrived the customary few minutes early. As we waited, a walk in applicant simply walked in, did the interview, fingerprint, retina scan, photograph and voila, was done. Moral of the story: after conditional approval and making interview appointment, if enrollment center is close by, try walking in.

I think things are more limited post covid, but if you live near a major border crossing or international airport, it helps to check all options for your final appointment. Sometimes an airport is faster than a land border, or vice versa. Friends drove from Ottawa to a slower border crossing to do theirs. They got an appointment within a few days. It's about an hour drive. I did mine at the airport but the retina scanner wasn't working, so they told me to just drop in before my next flight to finalize things. So may be worth being brash and just turning up.

Michigan has to major Crossing in the Lower Peninsula both with interview locations.
But then they are two of the busiest crossings that exist as well. And the one in Detroit has a tunnel as well as the bridge and is building another tunnel it is so busy.
