Zurich worth seeing for one day?

At the end of May, I'll be taking a cruise around the Mediterranean that will finish in Ravenna with a couple days to spare before flying home. One of the first options is to check out Bologna for that time but Switzerland is a place I've wanted to see, not sure though if one day to visit Zurich is worth it? it'd be about 6 hours by train so i'm not sure of that. Flying would be faster but more than twice the price of the train.

I love Switzerland, but Zurich isn't worth it to me. We love the Alps & Lucerne Switzerland. I wouldn't spend 6 hrs on a train to see Zurich. Bologna Italy is FOOD heaven and also a great town.

I'm spending two days in Zurich as part of a longer trip in June, I sure hope it's worth it! (Just kidding, I realize people have different perspectives, especially those who have been to Switzerland before. As this is my first time, I'm looking forward to it, and will be spending time in the "more interesting areas" in 2027. At least that is the plan.)

No, IMO, Zurich isn't worth going out of your way to see for a day.

But, the journey through the Swiss also may be worth seeing "with a couple of days to spare" if this may be your only chance to visit Switzerland. How much time do you have for Switzerland?

However, spending a few more days in Italy is a great consolation prize.

Will you fly out of Zürich? If that is an option, it might be worth it…as long as you have 2 nights so you have a full day in Zürich after your long train trip.

Ahhhh - yes, if you are flying out of Zurich, I'd head to Lucerne for a couple days - Zurich is less than an hour train ride away. But Bologna is great too. We are just always underwhelmed with Zurich, but you can see the Alps and even do a day trip to Mt. Pilatus from Lucerne.

Yeah I'm worried that Zurich is just another city and really nothing unique about it. The only benefit of coming to Zurich would be more easily catching a nonstop flight home as opposed to sticking around in Bologna.
Is Lugano worth visiting? I'm seeing there are some day trips/tours from Milan which is about an hour by train from Bologna.

I guess I'm missing something here. IMO, Switzerland is much more than cities. It's the journey through the mountains that is special.

How much time do you have after your cruise ends in Ravenna? Are you comfortable traveling by train and/or boat?

In just over 4 hours by trains, you can be in Lugano.

The next day head to Lucerne or Zurich

A couple possibilities that will give you with incredibly scenery.

Gotthard Panorama Express by train and boat to Lucerne.

Treno Gottardo

If flying home from Zurich can work for you, do it.

the cruise will dock in ravenna in the morning on a sunday, so if visiting lugano, i would probably catch the train to Milan via Bologna and then stay overnight. The following day, Monday, would be served for a day trip to Lugano or somewhere nearby. And then on Tuesday, I would be flying back to the US. The focus of the trip isn't exclusively Switzerland, and I agree, I would not go there just to check out cities, it's really about the natural geography and the Alps that I'd like to see.

Zurich is a great city, it's just that there are so many other places in Switzerland that are more worthwhile spending time in.

Zurich is a lovely city to visit when you're already to Switzerland, but it would be unusual to travel to Switzerland specifically to visit Zurich.
However, if you have "a couple of days" and can fly home from Zurich, then it would be a decent base for a 2-3 nights. Maybe spending just a few hours in Zurich itself (it's enough) and the rest in Luzern or on Rigi. Or even soaking in the waters of Baden, especially if the weather does not cooperate!

The history museum, which is right next to the main train station, has an excellent stone and bronze age section, and the rest of it is worth seeing also. I've spent 4-5 days in Zurich over the past three years and enjoyed all of them. The Augusto Giacometti painted frescos in the police station are world class, and a short train ride will take you to the Swiss Air Force museum which is on the main base used in WWII for impounding all aircraft, from both sides, that violated Swiss neutrality. They have an exceptional collection of rare planes!
