Planning to visit our foreign exchange student (from 2000) in Zurich. We only have 6 days. What other city(s) would you suggest visiting? We will be there the last week of November 2016.

First, I would ask him/her. He/she lives there, and probably has a good idea of places to visit, and may already be planning.
I assume you are staying with him/her the whole 6 days, and are looking for day trips. Zürich is nice, and if it was in any other country it would be a good place to visit. But, Switzerland is not known for cities, it is known for MOUNTAINS. You can spend 1-2 days seeing Zürich, included a trip on the lake.
The first place for a day trip is Luzern. This is only 1 hour from Zürich by train. This is where the Alps start. I would recommend going up Titlis. This is a snow-topped mountain with a series of cable cars to get to the top. Website: www.titlis.ch
If you fancy an all day circuit by train: Zürich - Luzern - Brünig pass railway - Interlaken - Bern - Zürich. If you start early you will have time to stop off for 1-2 hours en route, possibly in Bern.

Thank you. Actually we will not be staying there the whole time. I figure 2-3 days in zurich and then looking for somewhere to go for the other half of our trip.

If you want somewhere for 2+ nights, go into the Berner Oberland, somewhere above Interlaken: Mürren, Wengen, Grindelwald etc. All reachable by train from Zürich, and spectacular. November weather will be cold, but still worth it.
Your friend can probably advice further.

If you want a city I vote for Lucerne. Great place.
