Zurich to Milan in 10 days

Hi,
We are visiting first time to Europe from U.S. with 6 adults n 3 kids and plan to go from Zurich to Milan( we could do either way) in May last week and would like to travel below places, can someone please guide on how should we cover/ some detailed route info will be helpful , any important thing for kids (age 5-6 yr)which we should do, few important spots / activities we should do. Anything on food for veg which you can recommend. Should we take Half fare card or Swiss travel pass? I guess we need to carry Swiss currency n speical J plug to charge our phones.I guess public transport will be better between cities n with in city as well . Is it worth staying in hotel or airbnb? Thinking of staying in Zurich ( 2 night), Lucerne( 2 night) , Interlaken(1 night)(should we even do it , is it worth it) Murren( 3 nights), Lake Como( 2 night) , Milan( 1 night)

Your list is long for 10 days. Skip Zurich and go immediately to Lucerne (note it is Luzern to the Swiss) for 3 nights. Skip Interlaken and go immediately to Mürren. You can day trip to Interlaken if it really strikes you to do so, but up in the mountains is a better experience. Stay 4 nights. Moving on to Lake Como, assuming you stay in Varenna, it is a while day to get there, 6 to 7 hours. Final night Milan, of course, to ensure you catch your flight.

There are lots of activities and sights in both Luzern and Mürren area for everyone. Great playground in Mürren at Almendhubel, easy hiking/walks, trains and lifts to ride. One museum we like in Luzern is the Transportation Museum and of course there are mountains to ride up there as well. Rick Steves covers all of these areas (Luzern, Mürren, Lake Como, Milan) very well in his guide books.

Vegetarians are easily accommodated in most restaurants.

Probably the combination of half-fare card and a Berner Oberland Regional Pass will serve you well in Switzerland.

Thanks. Yeah I definitely understand that we are trying to cover lot many things. :) Quick question - we definitely want to do Tirano - St Mortiz by Bernina express. So what if we exit on St Mortiz and dont go to Chur ,do we miss anything big if we dont do Chur to St Mortiz to save cost and time.

Just be aware that in May some things are still closed. The funicular up to Almendhubel does not open until June.

Ok thanks I wasnt aware that some things still be closed. hows overall Swiss going to be in May end - June 1st week. or is there any other country / city which will be recommended over this.

I would not worry about the Almendhubel lift being closed, it is a very minor lift. The Schilthornbahn will be running, as will the Wengneralpbahn. If late May is the time you have available, and you want to see Switzerland, then its a great time to go.

We were in Wengen the last part of May this year and it was lovely. Mild temps, lots of snow on the peaks. We did not miss the lifts that were closed as there was plenty to do on the open trails and in the valley.

Working the Bernina Express into your itinerary is a challenge. It probably means giving up a night in Mürren to stay in St. Moritz then the next day taking the Bernina Express route to Tirano and on to Milan and on to Lake Como. That last bit -- St. Moritz to Tirano, Milan, and Varenna -- is a long long day, at least 6 hours in transit if all connections go smoothly. Note you do not have to take the actual Bernina Express. You can take the regular trains that travel the same route.

Agreed. I only mentioned that it will be closed because someone suggested it to the OP.

Thanks everyone for the reply. Here is what we are thinking-

Day1 - Land in Milan (afternoon) - Relax due to Jetlag after 12-13 hr flight from U.S.
Day2 - Cover Milan like Dunomo, Shopping plaza.
Day 3- Day tour to Lake Como - We wanted to stay overnight but as we need to take Bernina express so avoiding it this time.
Day 4- Go to Tirano from Milan Central to catch 2:00 clock train - Bernina Express, Go all the way to Chur. Reach Luzern to stay in Night. around 9.30 ish..yeah it will be a long trip but we might have to strech to avoid multiple stays.
Day 5- Explore Lucerne - like Chapel Bridge & Water Tower, Old town, Lake Lucerne, Dying Lion Monument. . Stay in Lucerne.
Day 6, 7, 8 - Travel to lauterbrunnen and stay 3 nights. Explore jungfraujoch region, grindelwald, Murren, Zermatt. Havent detailed out all the possible things to do but few things like - grindelwald first, cliff walk, famous zipline, Mountain bikes, schilthorn if possible, . I hope 3 night should be Ok to cover major of the areas. I am still Debating taking train for jungfraujoch train which is pretty expensive than going to Matheron Glacier. Is jungfraujoch train worth a hype.?
Day9- Travel to Interlaken. Put our luggage using Luggage services, we will have luggage as we will be travelling to India after that.
Explore Interlaken. Take train to Zurich and stay over night.
Day 10 - Explore Zurich preferably would go to Zoo and Lindt Choc for my little one and some more areas.
Day 11- take 10 o clock flight to India.

please let me know how does this overall looks? Hoping we cover some beautiful part of swiss and major attractions in lauterbrunnen and around. I really like overall lauterbrunnen and jungfraujoch region. Also please suggest where shall we stay between lauterbrunnen and Wengen.

You have so many long trips. Don’t spend an entire day going to Zermatt hoping to see the Matterhorn. Stay in the greater Lauterbrunnen area and enjoy the many choices there. You rally only have two full days with a three night stay. You can spend a day on the Mürren side of the valley and a day in the Wengen side and that is about it. Do you like to walk in the mountains or just ride the trains and gondolas?

i definitely like doing Hikes but may have to do shorter hikes as we will have kids. I have seen few hikes and will see if I can do them by myself by starting early in morning. I guess will skip Jungfraou station. Will schilthorn and Murren open in May 28-May31st.

are there any sites will recommend to book for stay? We are 4 adults and 2 kids and we will need a kitchen along with it. Our budget is around 400-450$ per night (2bed / 2bath) and seems that its tough to get anything close by during May29-Jun1 (3 nights) in Wengen. There are couple only in Lauterburren as well so was wondering does all these places gets booked so early. I found https://www.wengenapartments.com/ has availability in our budget so anyone knows hows it? this also requires most of them 4 night stay.

Looks like the Männlichen lift will open May 27, conditions permitting https://www.maennlichen.ch/en/summer/information/timetable.html. Great playground up there for the kids, and a walk to Kleine Scheidegg that is easy enough for children. That could still have snow on it so check conditions.

Another easy walk is from Grütschalp to Winteregg and on to Mürren. The whole thing is about 75 minutes but you can stop at Winteregg and finish by train if it is too much for the kids,

Edited to correct the link.

are Eiger Express , Grindelwald First and Schilthorn will also be open from May 27th? I tried looking at the site and it seems yes but wanted to check here incase if I am missing anything.
thanks for the apartment suggestions, i will have a look. just a quick question. most of them only ask Number of Adults stay. So does the children stays free or how does that work? because normally in hotels they ask number of adults and children's while booking the ticket.

I would make sure they know you have kids and how many.

Eiger Express and Schilthornbahn are year-round. I think First is as well but I have not looked specifically at that. You should be able to Google that.

Thank you Laurel. Does June 1st is official start for Jungfraou region to open, i have seen certain activities -JUNGFRAU EIGER WALK and others start from June1st. We are staying between May29- Jun1st(3 night /4 days) so want to make sure that we are not missing big by just arriving couple of days early as we haven't the booked tickets yet and have option to change dates slightly.

Also we are thinking of doing Girndelwald to Eigergletscher and than go via Kleine Scheidegg to Wengen (we are not buying ticket for Jungfraou as we won't be doing it) and we will have Berner Oberland pass. Is there a way we can go from Eigergletscher to Kleine Scheidegg with Berner Pass.

No. The opening date for many trails will depend on the amount of snow the area has. If you could push your trip back to mid-June, that would give you a better chance of more trails being open. But, there’s still plenty to do end of May early June. And it’s possible there won’t be a lot of snow and trails will open early. There’s no way to predict.

I really like the walk from männlichen to kleine Scheidegg. This typically opens mid-June. The last 2 years it has opened June 13th and June 10th. So, I have scheduled my trip to be in the area mid June. I would prefer end of May, as that would mean less crowds, but then I wouldn’t be able to do my favorite walk. I can be flexible with my dates, which lets me plan around certain things.

have option to change dates slightly

I wasn't sure if this meant you could change the dates of the trip.

Ok thanks, can you please let me know if this possible?

basically Wengen-Kleine Scheidegg to go up using train and than take a train Kleine Scheidegg to Eigergletscher and than via Eiger Express from Eigergletscher to Grindelwald. We are not doing Jungfraouch top of europe train and we have a Berner OberlandPass so hoping that we dont have to pay anything additional for Kleine Scheidegg to Eigergletscher. based on https://www.sbb.ch/ i shall be able to do it.
