Zurich to Luzern/Interlaken 2 days

Hi,

We are a family of 2 adults and a 10 yr old coming to zurich around the 2nd week of July from SFO. We'll be landing around 10AM in the morning and have around 2 days with us (and may be another 1/2 to travel back to zurich to take catch our flight) to spend some memorable days in switzerland. From what I read/hear from people and forums like this is, Luzern, Interlaken are some of the most picturesque places to visit. How long will it take to get to luzern from zurich by train. Any advise on a place to stay? All of us are vegetarians (lacto). Are there good vegetarian food options in luzern? Some suggestions on places to visit from there in 2 days would really help me plan our trip. I have rhine falls visit in mind. Any idea on which will be the easiest route to get there. Our primary interest is not to spend too much time in train since we are very short of time.

Thanks a lot.

You can find the route and time information easily enough on the Swiss Rail website. You can catch the train at the Zurich airport (Flughafen) train station, direct to Luzern. No need to go into Zurich itself. I think its about 1.5 hours. From Luzern to Interlaken is about 2-2.5 hours. There is plenty to see and do at both places. Interlaken takes you closer to the big mountains, Luzern is in beautiful setting on the lake. I would choose based on your next destination. Where to stay may depend on what you can find for July. Prepare for price shock. You can find some good info on TripAdvisor, and can ask about vegetarian restaurants there and get more answers.

Yes the prices are steep during July and most of the good ones are unavailable. Our plan is, if possible do some day trips locally for those 2 days with one city as base location. Will luzern fit that description? Thanks for your response.

Luzern is a good choice. It is only 1:02 from the Zurich airport if you take the direct train. Otherwise it takes 1:12, with one change at the Zurich main station.

Try the Goldener Stern hotel: http://www.sternluzern.ch/en/aktuell/news

Very moderately-priced and family-friendly. They do have triple rooms.

It is very easy to be a vegetarian in Switzerland as long as you eat cheese. Every menu will have vegetarian options such as salads, pizza, and pasta. Or try Rösti, a potato dish, with or without cheese. This is mountain food, however, so may not be common in Luzern. There are also specialty restaurants ( Indian, Asian, etc.) that are a good option for vegetarians.

Thanks a lot Lola for the information about the hotel. Any suggestion on what are the places we can visit from luzern?

I checked out Rick steve's information page on rail passes. For us we would need a train ride to and from the airport to Luzern and may be 2 days local. I'm thinking of doing a cost analysis on swiss pass, though we wont spend 4 days in switz. Which one do you think will be a better fit?
