Zurich to Lugano train

Hi ,
We are planning to go from Zurich to Lugano by train on 13th August.
Will the Saver Day pass make sense for us as it is cheaper than the point to point ticket?
Also will it be valid for any tram or bus rides in Zurich for that day( we will be carrying suitcases from our hotel to the the main Rail Station so a tram/bus might be easier)

Also what is the route of the Giruno trains? I can't find any mention of how to book any Zurich to Lugano ticket on Giruno hi-speed train.

Sorry for asking so many questions.

Giruno trains are just a specific type of train operated by SBB, not a train company.
So you just book on the SBB website as you would for any other Swiss train- button at top right on the referenced web page.

See which is the cheaper for your chosen train, but the Day Pass is not valid on Zurich city transit.

isn32c is incorrect. The Saver Day Pass is valid on all public transit in Switzerland, so also on the trams in Zurich. If that is the cheapest option SBB offers you on that date than yes, go for it. You will have a full day of unlimited travel.

So you could even take the Treno Gottardo over the older, more scenic route if you wanted.

In Lugano the Hotel will give you the Ticino ticket, which gives you unlimited travel on public transit in the Canton of Ticino, so you will have that covered than as well.

Giruno is just a typed of train, and one of the trains used on Zurich - Milano services. Lots of other services are run with Twindexx (new double deck) sets, especially on busy times. Finding out in advance which rolling stock will be used on a particular services is not always possible.

Thanks Carrie & WengenK for your detailed replies.
Helped me make up my mind, will definitely book the Saver Day pass.

Also does anyone know whether we need to reserve seats on the trains separately in Switzerland ?

If you check for times on the SBB app, it will show you which trains they expect to be crowded. Just under the time, you’ll see a 1 (1st class) and 2 (2nd class) with 3 little people after the numbers. 3 red people means they expect that train to be very crowded. Grey people means fewer crowds expected. It’s not 100% accurate, but it will give you an idea of which trains you might want to avoid if you are concerned about crowds.

I went from Zurich airport to Lugano this past March. I had the 1st class saver day pass though. In my experience, 1st class is rarely crowded. I’ve been to Switzerland 4 times in the last 2 years and have never bothered with seat reservations.

I’m not sure where you are staying in Lugano, but the saver day pass is also good on the funicular from the Lugano train station down to the old town. It’s a lot of stairs, so I would not want to walk them with luggage.
