We would like to travel (not by car) to Liechtenstein from Zurich for lunch just to add it to "places we have been". What is the easiest way to get there? It looks like we take train to a border town and then take the bus. And just as a side..why doesn't Liechtenstein have trains??
I look forward to any advice and experiences you can share.
Although I can think of about 1000 better things to do in Europe than just taking a train to a destination just so I could say I've done that...here is a whole thread describing the answer to your question:

The mainline train between Buchs, Switzerland and Feldkirch, Austria cuts right through Liechtenstein. It just doesn't stop there, primarily because there is nothing there. I guess there may be a few S-bahns that ply the route during rush hour. It is so small, that buses are the most effective means of public transport.
