We have a tour scheduled in mid-May in Italy and are considering a 3 day pre tour trip to Switzerland (probably flying into Zurich). We’re looking for suggestions on what to see and the Jungfrau Region seems to be popular. We’re not necessarily looking for hiking opportunities, but are more interested in seeing as much as we can. We don’t necessarily need to stay in Zurich, and are open to staying a night in different cities. Any suggestions would be welcome, along with the best way to get to Venice after this. I’ve tried researching trains but was overwhelmed with information.
First off, train schedules for next May for the most part don't exist and most definitely
are not cast in concrete, so don't make definitive plans based on what you see now.
But your mostly likely route of travel is Zurich->Milan->Venice. If you go into the
mountains, you may very well have to backtrack to Zurich to go onwards, so keep that
in mind.
Second, others may have more to say, but the mountains in mid-spring could be in
what is termed "mud season", with melt from the winter snowfall rendering hiking
paths and such kind of muddy.
Depending on your interests, 2-3 days in a mountain town such as Wengen or Murren
could be lovely, but I don't know what the "see as much as you can" line implies for
you. If you want to do that, fly into Milan and see Milan/Como instead. Plus it's an
easy train ride to Venice.
Easiest public transit is Zurich to Milan, there are 3 different railroads that go thru the Alps. From Milan to Venice, it looks like you have a good choice of train or Flix bus. Several scenic Italian towns where you can stop are on the way. Bon Voyage!
If you want to see the Jungfrau region, you should stay there rather than Zurich. I suggest Wengen. You can get there by train immediately after landing. On the current schedule, the fastest with fewest changes is departing Wengen at 6:43 am and arriving at Venice S. Lucia 7 1/2 hours later.
Thanks for the tips! We will do a little more research and then I’m sure will come back with more questions 😊
