Zurich or straight to Lucerne on Christmas Eve

We will be traveling from Salzburg to Zurich on 12/24. Since it is a long train ride, thought it would be best to stay in Zurich then travel in the morning to Lucerne on 12/25. Any thoughts?

Also, has anyone stayed at the Hotel Continental Park in Lucerne or St. Gotthard in Zurich?

Gee, its only one more hour to continue on to Luzern with an easy connection at Zurich Hbf. Why spend the time to check in to a hotel for just one night, then pull up stakes the next morning (Christmas day), go back to the train station, then take a 50 minute train to Luzern.

Is it not worth seeing Zurich for one night on Christmas Eve, maybe have a nice dinner?

Maybe a nicer dinner in Luzern, and cheaper dinner and hotel (probably). I don't think much will be going on Christmas Eve in Zurich that you can't find in Luzern.

Skip Zzurich as it is a business center.

Luzern is a relatively small and compact town compared to Zurich. A number of decent hotels are located a short walk from the Luzern train station.

Lucerne Christmas Market at the Train Station

Thursday, 23. November 2017 - Sunday, 24. December 2017 On the last day open till 16.00

Visitors will find around 50 festively decorated market huts at the
Lucerne train station. Inside the station hall, protected against rain
and snow, the Lucerne Christmas market is a lovely place to take a
stroll and browse.

On your transport post, I also shared the preference to go straight to Luzern. There are many better ways to spend Christmas morning than moving hotels! Two-night stays are less hectic and a full day in Luzern is pretty necessary if you want to take lifts nearby.

Luzern.

  1. Why break-up travel over 1 hour? What a hassle to disembark, go to hotel, unpack, repack, transport to train station, embarking train.

  2. Luzern over Zurich any day of the week and twice on Sunday. It is much more fun, quainter, still has the necessities (and more), easier to 'get to know', a gluten-free restaurant, safer (as if safety is really an issue in either), has a better lake ( ;) ), etc. etc. Zurich has better bars, more stuff open later, Pizza Blitz, that bar from Dublin, a water park, etc. Eh.

Best to you!

Ok, I'm sold no Zurich and straight to Lucerne

Any Christmas dinner recommendations? Fondue? Restaurants?
