Zurich or Chur

Hi all,
After an 8-day river trip, my mom and I will meet my dad in Zurich in late August before heading to Italy by train, on the scenic route Chur to Torina. My dad will arrive a day earlier to recover from jet lag.

Do you have any recommendations for a hotel where he can stay? We’ll join him the following day.

We’re deciding whether to spend that day and night in Zurich or take the train to Chur. I initially thought an extra night in Zurich would be a fun idea, but it seems like it might be pricey. I’d love to hear your thoughts and any suggestions you have about this!

We stayed in Chur for a night prior to our Bernina Express Train Ride. The town is charming. I had a walking tour/map that I got in advance from the TI. At one point, we walked up to a ridge with surrounding vineyards and great views. It has a pretty pedestrian only, old town area.

Zurich, to me, is a big city, a business center. I'd rather stay in the smaller towns.

In Chur, we stayed at Hotel Freieck (https://www.freieck.ch/en/Welcome) and were satisfied. It is on a pleasant square in the Altstadt (Old Town), about a 10 minute walk (slightly uphill) from the train station.
