Zurich Hotel Locations

Hello All-
We are planning on spending a few days in Zurich to see the sites (we have never been there before). We may also take the train and do a day trip from there also. We will be staying in a Marriott hotel since we are rewards members. The question is.... they list the hotels by locations. 1. North
2. Downtown
3. Lake
4. Basel
I'm assuming we don't want Basel, but which of the others would you recommend? Like I've said , we've never been there so I'm assuming we'll do all the touristy stuff first. We were thinking of maybe a day trip to Stein am Rhein and/or Schaffhausen. Thanks for any input.

North sounds like airport and business locations. Downtown ( by Hbf I assume) and Lake are next to each other. I'd go with Lake if you are paying with points.

Edit, the only lakeside Marrriott I see is in Rapperswil, a long way from Zurich, like the other end of the Zurichersee. I'd then go with a Downtown. There are 2 hotels in Oerlikon, a rather industrial/business district to the north, so I would pass on those.

I took a look at the Marriot website. Assuming they are all available with your points:

By “North” I assume they mean the Courtyard Zurich North, which is well out of Zurich halfway to the airport. Skip that one.

I assume these three are what they call “downtown”:

The Renaissance Zurich Tower and the Sheraton are both on the north side the train station, very close to it and well back from the river. I have not been in that neighborhood, but I notice on Google Maps it is labeled both “Zurich West” and “Industrie Quartier”. It looks like lots of high-rise buildings, and it is a long way from Old Town Zurich. Neither would be my choice.

The Zurich Marriott is also north of the train station, but more in front of it, and right on the river. I would be fine with that one.

The Neues Schloss Hotel is south, very near the lake, and as part of the “Autograph Collection” would be less of a standard Marriott experience. It would be easy to reach by taking the tram down Bahnhofstrasse to the lake, and a short walk. I like those hotels and probably would choose that one. It would be a nice walk to the Old Town area for the sights there.

The Kameha Grand Hotel is also part of the Autograph collection but is in Kloten, near the airport.

How long of a walk would you say it is from the Hbf to the lake (The Neues Schloss Hotel)?

P.S. Is there an app for the Swiss rail system ?

Please don't select the one in Zurich West. In 2018, I was groped and robbed very close to this hotel.

We stayed in the high rise Zurich Marriott, (Neumuhlequai 42,) the one on the river and about three blocks from the train station. They gave us a corner room with a great view , looking both towards the river and the lake. Spent our last evening watching the sun go down and drinking Swiss Pinot , watching the sites. In the summer, it's great entertainment watching folks jump off the bridge and float with the current, clothes in a water proof bag. And there were those who had tight wire ropes strung over the water, and did spectacular athletic feats.
We were about three blocks from the old town.
Have a great time!

Google maps says it is a 20-minute walk from the train station (Hauptbahnhof) exit to the Neues Schloss Privat Hotel—-0.9 mile. Right down Bahnhofstrasse, which is the main shopping street, then a dogleg several blocks west. The hotel looks to be 2 blocks back from the lake itself.

I have found their walking routes and times to be pretty accurate.
