I'm interested in taking a day trip from Zurich to Stein am Rhein and Schaffhausen. Would you recommend going to Schaffhausen first and then to Stein am Rhein or is it just too much to do all this in one day? And, if you had a choice, which one would you pick for a day trip? Or maybe you have a better suggestion. We're already doing a fairly extensive trip through Switzerland (including Lucerne), so just looking for short day trips. Thanks in advance!

The only time I would choose to spend a night in Zurich is to catch a flight the next morning from ZRH airport.

6 of one, half dozen of the other. What's your priority of sites to visit? Either/or, the trains run from early morning to late at night and to/from Stein am Rhein you will change trains in Schaffhausen.
