I am looking at a flight from Berlin that changes planes in Zurich en route to Bologna. Connection time of 50 minutes (the beginning of April). Is 50 minutes possible? I've never been to that airport so I don't know the size etc. Austrian Airlines for both flights. Thanks.
You may have bought the tickets from Austrian, but I'm willing to bet the flights will be operated by Swiss (or partner Edelweiss). It is a simple inter-Schengen change. I would not worry about it. Get off the plane and walk to the next gate and get on.
Looks like there is a flight to Bologna 4 hours later if you did miss it.
Since both are intra Schengen flights there is no security and no passport control to worry about. 50 minutes is enough time do even grab a drink or something to eat.
Swiss runs that airport and owns Austrian, so they will make that connection work if they let you buy it.
Both Swiss and Austrian are actually subsidiaries of Lufthansa.
Anyway, normally connections within the Schengen area are pretty quick as the gates are in the same section of the airport (within a 10-15 min walk), so you should be able to make it. Normally they also show the transfer gates on the in-flight screens before landing, so you know exactly where you need to go. Just don't plan on a leisurely layover in Zurich with lots of time for shopping or eating.
If you want to avoid connections and are ok with a budget airline, I believe Ryanair flies between Berlin and Bologna as well.
Yes true, Swiss and Austrian are owned by Lufthansa (I believe also the Belgian carrier)
We had a 45-minute connection between Edelweiss & Swiss Air in September and had plenty of time … even having to go through passport control, since our Edelweiss flight came from Denver.
We were supposed to have almost three hours for the connection but our Denver flight had been delayed. So we had some nervous moments but it worked out fine. Zurich is a comparatively small airport.
