Zurich Bern & Murten

Hi ther e,

My Family is flying in to Zurich on our way to do a self guided walking tour in Bernice Oberland area which starts in Muerren. I thought we would spend one night in Zurich and then train to Bern and spend one night there before we make our way on to Muerren. Does this make sense and would we also be able to explore the town of Murten as well if we only have about a day and a half.

Are there any recommendations on where to stay? Will it be easy enough to get around in Bern without the use of a car?

I would go direct to Bern, and spend your two nights there. It is only 1h10 from Zurich airport station (Zürich Flughafen) to Bern, and there are 2 departures per hour.
Murten is 35 mins. from Bern, but it is only worth ½ day.

"Will it be easy enough to get around in Bern without the use of a car?" - Like most Swiss cities, it is impossible to get around central Bern with a car. The centre (everything from the station) is pedestrianised, trams and buses only. And there is good transport to the rest of the city.

An alternative for your 2 nights is Luzern. Old town on a lake with boat trips. See this 360° panorama of the town: http://tour.luzern.com/360/en/
70 minutes from Zurich airport to Luzern by train, and from there to Interlaken and Mürren is a scenic train ride over the Brünig pass.

BTW, its the Berner Oberland (=Bern Highlands)
