We are arriving in Zurich at 6am on Friday morning from Boston. Our plan is to take the train to Lake Lucerne and stay Friday night and Saturday night. Sunday we go to Munich.
Is it worth it to stay in Zurich the morning we land and then go later in the day to Lake Lucerne?
Our second day in Lucerne is taking a tour of Mt Pilatus Cable Car, Cogwheel Train and Lake Cruise which is 5.5 hours.
My concern is not having enough time to explore the town if we choose to spend time in Zurich.
I would head straight to Lucerne. The train station is right inside the airport and it just takes slightly more than an hour. Regular train tickets are not time specific and no need for reservations. So, buy a ticket when you land and hop on any train.
Since you are arriving from an overnight flight and only have the two nights I think I would head straight to Lucerne and explore the city on arrival day. I’ve been to both cities, and I like both cities, but I do prefer Lucerne. If you decided to spend some time in Zurich first, you would probably want to store your luggage then take the train into Zurich, which takes 11 minutes. You could exit the station, ride the tram to Paradeplatz to Confiserie Sprungli for breakfast (and get some Luxemburgerli), go see the Marc Chagall windows at the Fraumunster nearby (get the included audioguide, walk back to the windows and sit and listed to the commentary). Then head back to the train station via the Bahnhofstrasse stopping at numerous other chocolate shops on the way.
Agreeing with Carrie. Skip Zurich and go to where you really want to be. Especially if you have jet lag and are just going to walk around disoriented.
