Flying into Zurich in September, staying in "old town" Zurich, any advice on transportation from the airport, what is the best option. We are getting in about 8:30 am and have 4 people with carry-on luggage and back packs. Thank you.

Just walk downstairs. The airport is on top of the train station.

Technically the train station is below the shopping mall across the street from the main terminal:)
You can get exact directions (including walking) to your destination via the Swiss Rail site: http://www.sbb.ch/
Simply type Zurich Airport in the From box, and the name of your hotel or address the the To box.

Make sure you buy tickets before you board the train----you cannot buy them on board, and if they happen to check, the fine is large if you do not have tickets.

As the others have said, travel by train is by far the easiest and cheapest method. The trip from the airport to Zürich Hbf only takes about 10 minutes. Depending on where your hotel is located, you either walk or take a Taxi from the main station.
