We have a few hours to spend in the Zurich airport before our connecting flight home, and I was wondering if there were any unique highlights to see or souvenirs/food items to check out while in the airport. This will be our only time in Zurich - we will be arriving from Luzern for the trip home. I realize we may be stuck behind security once we check in, but in case we have some spare time, I'd appreciate some suggestions.

In your other post you say your flight home is from Schipol, Amsterdam. Which airport will you actually be in?
Both airports! It is not a direct flight home, and we are trying to make the most of the layover times.

Schipol has a branch of the Rijks museum for your delectation. I seem to remember that there is a casino as well, but I might be wrong.

You could always spend some time shopping. You'll be funneled through duty free shops when you exit security, so lots of opportunities to pick up a few gift items. There are lots of food joints past security also, so you could have a relaxing meal.
The Rijksmuseum at Schipol has been closed due to construction until "mid-2015." Check again closer to your travel date.
Because it's now just so time-consuming and unpleasant to deal with airport security, it's risky to recommend that someone on a layover (esp. since you don't say how many a "few" is) to pop into town and sightsee.
Right across the street from Zurich airport terminal is a multi-level shopping mall which also contains the train station into town. It's not a long train ride, but again you leave the airport at your own risk. Probably best to just stay in that mall, have some shop, some nosh. Or think about getting a day room at an airport hotel.
