My husband and I have 8 days to explore Switzerland/Austria ... etc. in the end of March. Looking for some direction. We will be flying into Zurich. We are in our 50s... but not big on long hikes or art museums or "tourist" traps (amusement park-ish places). We are up for renting a car.
We love to drive and explore, and eat at unique places, as well as stay at local places (not the big brands). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Is this part of a longer trip? That detail helps with suggestions and directions of itinerary. Where are you flying out of? How many nights do you have in country?
Also, the Swiss have built a world class rail system. It's easier to use the trains than a car there.
Wishing you a great trip.
You might enjoy Lake Constance, which is an easy drive from Zurich. The weather may be more Spring like because of the large water body effect. There are many Boats that cross the Lake. Some ride Bikes along the Lake until they can catch a Boat/Ferry back to their starting point.
I would seriously look at staying around Lake Constance. You have dinosaurs, zeppelin rides, boating, castles, huge public gardens (Mainau), museums, the Rhine Falls, cable cars up into the Alps, hiking trails, local fests, antique shops, flea markets, fresh produce, etc. Downtown Konstanz is very nice, but the smaller towns around the lake are great for exploration. If you stay on the south end of the lake you can easily visit Lichtenstein. I highly recommend taking the cable car up from Dornbirn on a clear evening and eating on top of the mountain looking out over the lake (make reservations for dinner). You could easily visit Lindau also. I've spent a week there a couple times in the past two years and still haven't seen everything.
I've stayed at the Hotel Waldhaus Jakob with family. We liked it, kind of offbeat, right on the bus line, good beergarden, and comfortable. I've also used the Steigenberger, which is right on the water and exceptional. And on the south end I stayed in the Sheraton in Dornbirn due to the location and was very happy with that also. Lake Constance is a very popular location and there are a lot of choices for lodging.
In March the spring flowers will be out. Do not miss Mainau, it will be spectacular.
another strong vote for Mainau. Fabulous. I'm sure they will have some good stuff on display.
