Planning to stay in Zurich area for 4 days and would prefer not to stay in the city. We will be traveling by train and have a few days trips planned from Zurich. Then off to Lucerne. Does anyone know of a location near Zurich to stay as a base? Hotels seem very expensive. Not going until September 2025

This thread popped up a few weeks ago about Duebendorf, a Zurich suburb with a reasonable hotel. Unfortunately, the thread quickly devolved into a discussion about Swiss electrical sockets.

I LOVED Rapperswil, a small marina town at the southern tip of Lake Zurich. Just 25 mi nites from Zurich by train.

What are the day trips you have planned? Usually there is no need whatsoever to stay in or near Zurich when visiting Switzerland.

Just thinking about Rhine falls and stein am Rhine, st gallen looks nice, not totally sure , just starting to plan for next September

Thought it would make a good base for some day trips. Plan to go to Lucerne after that for several days with other days trips

The area around Rhinefall is not especially attractive, nor inexpensive, and it's a fair distance from Zurich. If you're going to stay that far away look at Dornbirn, or even Konstanz.
