Zermatt to Venice Trains

We are staying in Zermatt August 22-24 and then heading to Venice. I’ve been seeing that trains are disrupted around Zermatt from the flooding and subsequent construction, so it looks like our journey is going to take longer than expected.

On the SBB website, I’m seeing that we could take an 8.5 hour trip from Zermatt, to Brig, to Iselle, to Domodossola, to Milan, to Venice. But when I try to buy these tickets, it says that my journey cannot be booked.

All other websites I’ve seen seem to indicate that it’s basically impossible to get from Zermatt to Venice in a day. Does anyone have any advice on how to make this work?

It is a bit of a mess at the moment. But the disruption on Zermatt - Visp should be over by the 22nd. If not you may have to leave a bit earlier than your booked time.
And then there are the engineering works in Italy, which this year Trenitalia appears to have planned with maximum disruption in mind.

My suggestion: Take the train to Zurich or Geneva, and fly.

You could buy this as 2 tickets, one from SBB for Zermatt to Domodossola for 58.40 CHF, and one from Trenitalia for Domodossola to Venezia S. Lucia for 62 EUR base fare fully refundable. Depart Zermatt at 9:37 am, arrive Domodossola at 12:10 pm, then depart Domodossola at 12:30 pm, arrive Venice at 6:42 pm.

If Zermatt to Taesch is not up and running by then, it will be 3 replacement buses along the way, including Iselle to Domodossola and Domodossola to Milano Centrale.
