Trying to travel by train from Zermatt to Varenna mid June 2024. It appears that ticketing is not available yet. Am I seeing this correctly? Someone told us that the tickets may not be posted to early May.

There are some tickets available. You will have to take a train replacement bus from Domodossola to Milano Centrale, then change to the regioanl train to Varenna-Esino. That one may not be on the schedule yet, but it will show up in the fullness of time. Since the train replacement bus requires a reservation, you could buy it now.
This happens at this time (and October onward) every year. Its just the Italian way of doing things. Schedule officially changes on June 9.

It is only the section by regional train from Milan to Varenna that is not up yet. The schedule from Zermatt to Milano Centrale is available now on SBB.ch, and you can buy tickets for mid-June now. You might want to do that, as a section of the track will be closed for renovation, and there is a bus link between Domodossola and Milan. You can book the Swiss train from Zermatt to Brig and the EC train to Milan, which includes the bus.

There is no need to buy the regional train to Varenna in advance. You can even buy it last minute at the station.
