Zermatt to Milan Train

Hello-
Me, my wife, and kids are traveling to Switzerland this summer. Trying to figure out getting from Zermatt to Milan for our flight home.

I was able to book all of our other train travel (from Milan and then through Switzerland) without any issues through the SBB app. I am struggling with getting a reasonable train trip from Zermatt to Milan, though.

My kids enjoy the train travel so we’re fine with a 5ish hour trip but the 5ish hour routes are coming up as unavailable. I was thinking it was because we’re 6 months out (this trip is happening July 8) but I had no problem selecting one of the 8 hour routes (which would be insane).

I am curious if anyone has any insight into what’s going on. I guess my main questions are:

1) am I just too early and need to chill out?
2) I do not want to skip Zermatt but that is an option and we can try a different spot - being in Milan on July 9 is a non-negotiable. Should we explore adjusting our itinerary?
3) are we stuck taking a super long train?
4) other options or ideas?

Thank you!

You are way to early to book this.

But your problem is that the Simplon route is going to be partly closed for maintenance on your travel date. There will be replacement busses, but they are not in the timetable yet.

So look again in a April or so. There will be a way to get to Milano, do not worry about that.

The train construction around Milan for the last couple summers makes this route a pain. Do you have flexibility to adjust your itinerary? Assuming not, since it sounds like you’ve already pre purchased train tickets?

thanks for the responses. makes sense to wait.

as far as adjusting the itinerary, not a ton - flight home is from Milan so we have to get to there somehow and we did already book our train travel TO Zermatt.

fine dealing with some construction or delays…kids are good travelers and we’re pretty relaxed about these sorts of things. as long as there is a reasonable way to get there, we will be fine…just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing something.

will look again in spring time and see what we can do.

There will be a reasonable way to get there. But currently the train planners cannot find it yet, because it is not published yet.

Going by previous summers you will probably get:
- Local trains run on the section of the line that is open, and busses are used for the part that is closed. So you get a few extra changes.
- EC trains are replaced by busses that run all the way to Milano.

Expect to need about an hour more than you would normally need.

Since you are flying out from Milan: Know that the Milan Malpensa airport is actually half way between Milan and Switzerland. You may want to investigate just travelling directly there and staying at an airport hotel for your last night.
