Hi all! I was wondering if anyone had any idea the best route to take from zermatt to lake como? I haven’t found any direct routes if there is any? We will be going in July 2024! Thanks!

No direct route. In fact, from Zermatt there are no direct trains to anywhere except Visp and Brig. It is a narrow gauge railway, so you will have to transfer to a standard gauge railway to get anywhere else in Europe.

I would suggest Zermatt to Visp to Milan to wherever you want to go on Lake Como that has rail service.

PS. Except, of course, you can get as far away as St Moritz directly, since it is narrow gauge all the way. That is the famous Glacier Express train. It is an option to get to to Lake Como, by changing there to a train to Tirano, Italy, then a train to east shore locations on Lake Como, like Varenna. But it will take 2 days to get there, although a scenic 2 days.

PPS, Could be done in a day during the summer if you don't mind a 12 hour journey time.

In addition to the routes mentioned by Sam, if your destination is on the western shore of Lake Como (e.g. Menaggio or Como town), it would also be possible to take the train from Zermatt to Brig and Brig to Domodossola, and take the local Centovalli railway from there to Locarno (a very scenic trip). In Locarno, there are direct trains to Lugano, where there are buses to Menaggio. Those trains often continue to Italy via Como town.

Hi! Thank you guys for writing back to me, I just started getting ready to buy the tickets and officially plan the route. This is what I have so far I’ll take any feedback or input anyone has!

SBB
-Zermatt to Brig
-Brig to Domodossola
-Domodossola to Locarno FART
-Lorcano to Como S.Giovanni

Once we arrive we will get a ferry from Como to Varenna. SBB doesn’t let me book the whole thing i guess because it includes Italy train tickets. I’m going to wait a month or so and then check the website to see if they’ve updated and released their set schedules.

The direct trains from Locarno to Como are TILO trains and not sold by Trenitalia. You can just buy tickets at Locano station.

Even for next week, SBB will not let me book the route you want to Como, but it will let me book to Chiasso, the last stop in Switzerland and taxi distance form Como. Note, the TILO trains that run direct to Como leave at 22 past the hour and the FART trains from Domodossola arrive at 20 past the hour, so you won't make the connection and have to hang out in Locarno for an hour, which maybe is not a bad thing.

TILO is a regional rail network partnership of the Swiss canton of Ticino and the Italian province of Lombardy. Thus TILO

I think we will do that route! Thank you for letting me know about that alternative, we will take a taxi to Como and ferry from there to Varenna. Do you know what the difference is between Point-to-Point ticket vs Saver day pass? I tried googling it and i came across a Reddit page saying Saver day would only be for only in Swiss trips? Anyway Thank You again!
