My husband and i will be going from Pontresina to zermatt (maybe) by train around august 23rd for one night at the most. My dilemma is that weather conditions are not always great to see the Matterhorn so i would rather not book a hotel room in Zermatt and just wait and see at last minute what the weather conditions are going to be and if not good, then just go on to montreux or lausanne if not. What are my odds for getting a one night hotel room in Zermatt last minute if weather is good and we decide to stop and see it the next morning? And if we dont stop at zermatt, what are odds of adding on one more night in the Lausanne area last minute? Im hoping maybe it wont be quite so touristy towards third week of August and i can get a hotel room last minute (im having all other hotels reserved) for something less than an arm and a leg!

Not sure. I know the difference and on some i intend for sure to ride local trains along the express rail line. Pontresina-zermatt is a long journey so i may want to go express. But it doesnt matter i dont think for the purpose of my question: Will i be able to get a last minute hotel room in zermatt or in lausanne that time of year?

Zermatt has thousands of hotel rooms, so I doubt they all get booked up on a given date. Maybe you can't get your preferred property, but I would be sure you would find something.
