Zermatt one night or two? With Gornergrat highlight.

How long does Gornergrat excursion typically take? Our plan is to leave Montreaux for Zermatt to do the Gornergrat as a highlight. (May 2023). We plan for 2 nights in Zermatt. Could we do just 1 night in Zermatt and not feel rushed? Say, do the Gornergrat on afternoon of arrival in Zermatt, or the morning we leave if we only stay one night? After zermatt we head towards Chur on the route of the Glacier Express (no reservation just on local trains) Just trying to figure out timing!

Thanks in advance!

Figure on two nites as you want to be ok if the weather is not great the first day… it’s an awesome adventure.

Two nights Zermatt. To see the Matterhorn is weather related, so the more time the better. Even if both days are clear, you get that view even more! We did the Gornergrat trip and we walked a part of the way back down, all with the Matterhorn in plain view! Then grabbed the cog train for the rest of the trip back into Zermatt.

Agreed - Gornergrat is not intended to be rushed as you can get off at multiple stops to explore. No hiking detours you want a half day to actually stop and take in views. Time to hike around at the stops should be more like a full day. If you're taking the time to go to Zermatt you also want a half day to walk around and explore the town. It's quite large and takes a while to explore on foot.
