I'm in Zermatt in December for 3 days. My daughter will spend 1 day skiing. Can you recommend where in Zermatt we are best to base ourselves as first-timers, and what you'd recommend we do on non-ski days. Thanks!
I’d recommend Hotel Perren for your stay. Close to the train station and action but just far enough away to feel quiet. The staff are all wonderful, breakfast is delicious and varied, and you can reserve a decommissioned gondola for a private fondue dinner.
Thanks! Appreciate your advice.
Zermatt is chock full of hotels, from small apartments to five star palace hotels. The choice depends on your budget and the type of hotel style you like. The village is small enough that almost every place is walkable, but Bahnhofstrasse up from the train stations is where most of the shops and restaurants are located.
Many hotels require one week minimum stays as the high season of skiing arrives. Often restaurant reservations are required as well.
Eating fondue is a popular Swiss pastime in Winter.

How good of a skier is your daughter? Zermatt is huge, and with a high vertical drop.
We spent a week there New Year's so husband could go up and down the slopes. There are a few different lift options depending on which part of the mountains' peaks one wants to try out. One day is really just an introduction. Don't forget to advise your daughter to purchase mountain insurance and potentially reserve her equipment in advance as well.
I am a non-skier, and I took the Gornergrat train to spend the day looking at all the views and exploring the little Zooom activity center, and I had a drink at the hotel bar. Matterhorn Glacier Paradise is another popular tourist stop.
The tourist office next to the train station can provide a lot of information about activities.
Have fun planning, and have a nice trip!
There are about a zillion hotels in Zermatt, and most of them seem to offer rooms with Matterhorn views.
Like Skubes, above, we stayed at the Hotel Perrin. It was early December and my daughters went skiing while I walked around town taking a crazy number of pictures of the Matterhorn because we were lucky to get a cloudless sunny day. We had a room with a balcony and a view of the Matterhorn and I could hardly sleep because I just kept getting up and looking at the view.
I say this with some amusement because I didn't even want to go to Zermatt at all, but my daughter was meeting friends to go skiing (she got there earlier and her sister and I came later). I also thought the Matterhorn was super cliche. And I'd heard how often the Matterhorn is covered in cloud, so I never wanted to go all that way and pay all that $$ to see nothing. But there it was, and I couldn't stop taking photos of it.
Anyway, the Hotel Perrin was great. They have a very nice breakfast, which was included in our stay.
