Hello,
We will be in Zermatt in August... hoping for a sunny day. Does anyone have experience and or suggestions about the high mountain excursions available from Zermatt. We are going up for the experience and the views, as most of our hiking will be in the Gimmelwald-Murren area.
Thank you.

We used Rick Steves’ Switzerland guide when we visited Zermatt and took many of the high mountain trains along with some fantastic hikes. I recommend starting with his book. You’ll want it with you for the Berner Oberland, too,
We have Rick's travel guide and are studying it for every bit of adventure we can squeeze out of our month in Switzerland. We are looking for first hand advice of some specifics that anyone has experienced in Zermatt......especially since the options are fairly expensive.
Thank you
Our two favorite hikes starting in Zermatt are:
Take the funicular(?) up to Sunnegga, then hike over to Grindjisee for a nice pic of the Matterhorn in the background, then head towards Riffelberg, where you can take a train back down.
The other is take the train up to Gornergrat, then hike down the hill from the station towards Riffelsee. If lucky, you can catch the Matterhorn's reflection in that lake. Then hike up towards the train tracks and catch the train at Riffelberg.
