What can we expect weather and lift wise in Zermatt August 22 - 24? This is a bucket list stop on our way to Italy.
It will vary from day to day depending on the weather, which can change hour to hour. If you are staying there for three days your chances of having clear weather will be better. Get out early in the morning and get on a lift to be out of the town and out of the valley while it's clear. It tends to cloud up in the afternoon. Check the forecast a few days before you arrive to see how it will be - the Alps are just a little unpredictable, even in August.
This Zermatt website might help: http://www.zermatt.ch/en. Most of the information is contained in the planning and booking section. If the lifts aren't running for some reason when you are there you can probably take the Gornergrat train.
Unfortunately, I didn't see a weather averages option on their weather info. Googling weather average zermatt will produce lots of options to find out about August, but my favorite is Weatherbase: http://www.weatherbase.com/weather/weather.php3?s=152241&cityname=Zermatt-Switzerland. The link is directly to Zermatt. You can explore more from there.
We were there in late June, 2011. We stayed in the lovely Hotel Daniela (http://www.julen.ch/en/hotel-daniela/welcome/) with a view of the Matterhorn from our balcony. We walked everywhere we went in town.
We were only there 2 nights but it was enough time for us to do and see all the things we wanted to. We particularly liked exploring "old" Zermatt and the graves of those who died on the mountain. A great surprise was when a procession for the Feast of Corpus Christi went right by our hotel while we having breakfast one morning.
Zermatt was not a bucket list item for us, but when I realized it was right on the way from Lake Como to Annecy, I had to work it into our itinerary. It was well worth the stopover. By the way, we were driving. The Zermatt website has all you need to know about getting there, but if you are planning to drive, you will have to leave your car in Tasch and take the train or private transport to the town. Zermatt is car-free.
August in the Alps is usually warm to hot (rare), with cool nights. Not the wettest month, but always prepare for at least some rain.
All the lifts that usually run in the summer should be open, barring any unexpected mechanical or weather problems.
Thanks to all for the information.
Thanks, again, all.
