Zermatt and Luzern recommendations

My wife and I will be traveling to these two towns in mid July. Looking for hotel recommendations (preferably under $160 per night)- as well as places to eat that were memorable and things worth doing in the area.

Zermatt: Hotel Ambiance (ask for a Matterhorn view room), Fondue and folk music at the Schweitzerhof Hotel. No Matter how you cut it, $160/night anywhere in Switzerland is a tough find. Zermatt, good luck.

I had a great stay at Grand Hotel Zermatterhof (Matterhorn view from my balcony!), but like the previous poster noted, $160 a night in Zermatt will get you the bare basics and not much else. For that price, you would probably find yourself staying in a small chalet apartment up on the hillside and you would probably have to lug you bags from the train station.

We have been to both, but not since 1994. However, we will return to both Zermatt and Lucerne this September, 2014, and plan on using these hotels as our first choices. In Zermatt, we have stayed twice at the Hotel Antika, run by the family Julen-Ragotti. We had a nice room with a balcony and view of the Matterhorn (Room # 206). The family also ran a very good restaurant up the street. In Lucerne, we have two recommendations. Near the Chapel Bridge, and right on the river, we would recommend the Hotel Balances, although it may be a bit expensive. Last time in Lucerne, we found a great hotel closer to the Lion Monument, and easy walking distance to everything one would want to see and do in Lucerne. It was the Hotel Restaurant Weinhof. A quick check on the internet can tell you if these are still operating and acceptable to your needs.
