Zermatt: Accommodations and Summer Skiing?

Hello,

My roommate and I are taking a trip to Switzerland the first week of September and are making a quick stop in Zermatt to do some summer skiing and see the Matterhorn.

We are taking an early morning train in from Muerren to Zermatt, plan on exploring that day, skiing all the next day and taking an evening train out that night to Lucerne. I am needing suggestions for:

Hotels (preferably affordable!)
Ski rentals/ ski passes, etc.
Anything else we might need to know about Zermatt!

I looked at the Zermatt booking site. The Astoria was one of the least expensive and I've been there. Its a good hotel with a good location, near the bus to the lift station and there is a ski shop right around the corner where you can rent equipment. I saw a studio type bedroom & bath for 130 chf/night.

Well here is my list for next week (I've yet to book):

Hotel Gornergrat Dorf (https://www.gornergrat.com)
Derby Hotel (http://www.derbyzermatt.ch)
Hotel Butterfly (http://www.hotel-butterfly.com/index.php?id=7)
Testa Grigia Garni (http://www.testa-grigia.com)

I'd start with the Gornergrat because it is more or less just across from the train station, so it is very handy.

Zermatt also has a quite new youth hostel: http://www.youthhostel.ch/en/hostels/zermatt.
