Yucky weather forecast for Luzern

We will be in Luzern tomorrow (Sunday 22 May) through Wednesday. Planning to purchase either the 2 or 3 day Tell Pass for use Monday, Tuesday and/or Wednesday. We can use as much of the day on Wednesday in the area as needed since we just need to train back to Strasbourg sometime that day. No plans for much else up on the various mountains except to enjoy the trips up and down and the scenery at the top,. The forecast has me debating on the 2 or 3 day pass as well as concern that the weather could be unpleasant the entire time we are there.

Thought, anyone? I’m trying to stay positive but…..

My experience in the area - of course limited- is that rain usually lasts for part of the day, not all day, and you can have much variability within one day. Also, sometimes the weather at the summits is completely different, as you can be above the clouds and have clear skies. I also enjoy the boat rides-so serene.
Good luck!

Like Pat mentioned, a forecast for rain doesn’t necessarily mean an all day rain. When I was in Switzerland last year, I believe rain was forecast for most days and we only had 2-3 days of some light rain for an hour or two.

The meteoswiss app or website is a good place to check for the local weather. In checking that, I don’t see much rain for the next few days.

Stay positive!! 😊

Thanks Pat and Carrie. We are starting week 5 of our 7.5 week trip and have had very good weather thus far. I’ve nothing to complain about so will deal with whatever comes our way.

I'm in Luzern now (before an ill fated trip to Wengen I posted of separately) and went up to Mount Rigi today. The forecast was 45% cloud cover for Luzern on AccuWeather. In reality the weather at Luzern was fine and the boat trip across lake Luzern was beautiful. The cogwheel train ride up the mountain you are still below the clouds, so if you sit facing downhill on the side closer to the station as Rick mentions in his guide, you get a great view going up.

Now the issue was once you actually get to the top... the clouds tended to cluster around the mountain peaks. Once I got past Rigi Kaltbald the clouds were literally right there all around and you couldn't see a thing. There was still a huge crowd of tourists going up the mountain but once we got there we found ourselves surrounded by white fog with no visibility.

The Webcam is crucial, however make sure the date and time at the bottom is current. At Luzern I was getting a 4 day old Webcam for Rigi with slow wifi.

Thanks for those tips! If the views are clouded, well, misery loves company! The air will be pleasant and the journey will be enjoyable regardless.

We spend a lot of time in mountains all over the world, in all kinds of weather. One of the most beautiful sights I have seen was from Rigi Kaltbad on a “bad weather” day. We had come from Arth-Goldau by train over the top of Rigi in thick fog, with no views at all from Rigi Kulm. When we descended to Rigi Kaltbad to our hotel, the fog lifted and cleared, but the clouds below remained. We were greeted by a view similar to this, a thick blanket of clouds below us, with the tops of peaks sticking up through (our visit was in June so no snow nearby like in the photo).

We dropped our bags at our hotel, bundled up for the cold, and headed out for a walk to savor that view.

By morning, the clouds had cleared and we could see the classic view over the lake. But I will never forget how beautiful it was above the clouds.

As they say, there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing for it.

Great time at Rigi today! Left Luzern on the 10:12 boat and had great weather on Rigi until around 1:00. Awesome views. The clouds started rolling in quickly so we went down to get the cable car to Weggis. No weather issues there. Rain started just as the boat approached Luzern and soon thereafter the sky fell. Love that statement that there is no bad weather, only bad clothes for it. We have the right clothes and shoes! Sat out the rain with some wine near the dock/train station. Aiming for Titlus tomorrow.

Glad you were able to enjoy Rigi. It is a favorite of mine. I hope Titlis works out tomorrow.

We actually experienced the view Lola posted on a Dec, 2019, trip. As we climbed on the cogwheel train, the view was completely clouded in. I had just said to my daughter, "Looks like we will turn around at the top and come back down- at least we had the boat and train ride." Then suddenly the entire trainload of passengers gasped simultaneously, as we came into bright blue skies and several feet of fluffy white snow, above the cloud cover!!! I don't even have the words to paint the picture.
Without a doubt, one of my favorite travel moments.

My second fav one -a fantastic day on the top of Mt. Titlis- even our RS Guide was taking pictures and was overwhelmed by how clear the day was and incredible the vistas were.

Titlus was completely clouded so minimal views from there but we had light snow and sleet! It was an enjoyable experience even without the views. The gondola and cable car rides were quite thrilling and my walk (halfway only) on the suspension was moving!

I’m glad you were able to enjoy the trip to Titlis despite the weather. Snow and sleet?!?!?!?! Well, I guess I better pack my puffer coat!! 😊
