Hello, my bf and I are traveling to Switzerland in May and he would like to check out 1-2 WW2 era sites while we are there. I will be meeting him in Geneva and we have 8 days of sightseeing before we have to be back to Geneva to fly out. My loose plan is to take us immediately to Lausanne, possibly go through the Berner Oberland to Luzern then on to Appenzell, perhaps a site in Germany or Austria, then back to Geneva. Wondering if Munich, Germany makes the most sense to see Dachau or if there is someplace closer or more convenient? Ancient history is more my forte, so looking for suggestions from any WW2 history buffs here! Thank you!
How about Berchtesgaden: its close and more of what you want (see Eagles Nest).
That's a lot of ground to cover in 8 days. Nevertheless, the closest concentration camp may be Natzweiler-Struthof in Alsace, France. No idea whether you could reach it using public transport, though. In Switzerland you could visit the Festung Fürigen near Luzern , although you have to check their opening hours. The fortress San Gottardo opens in June.
Don' t know if this would count, but 23 Herrengasse in Bern where Allen Dulles was OSS spymaster from the end of 1942 to the end of the war, would be on my list.
