Winter clothing for going up Schilthorn/Jungfrau/Gornergrat/Mt Rigi

Hi all,

I come from a country where it is 30°C all year round. Do I need to bring thick jackets, gloves and thermal inner wear when I take the mountain rails to these places in mid June? I googled for weather and it shows close to 0°C but when I searched for pictures, some people seem to be able do with just a simple jacket.

Thank you in advance.

In mid September we wore long sleeved tees, sweaters and our rain jackets over them, jeans, sneakers with socks. We were fine.
We felt sorry for a group of women from India who were only wearing saris and sandals in the snow. You can stay inside of course, where the restaurants are located.

30°C is a hot summer day in the Swiss lowlands, above average but it does happen a few times every summer.
The tops of the Alps have permanent snow cover, with glaciers, so it will be below 0°C as it is FROZEN. This is what people come to see.
Rigi is lower than the rest and doesn't have permanent snow at the top.

Today was above average for May (in the Swiss lowlands), it peaked at 22°C, tomorrow is 14°C. Above 25°C is too hot for me. I am happy to be outside at -5/0°C for an hour or two with just a coat or a thick jumper on, as long as it is dry and not windy. I don't own any thermal wear.
I think you will need more covering than me or the people you see in the photos, even at the bottom of the mountains.

Keep in mind, photos get taken on pleasant days, with the sun shining and light wind. The Jungfraujoch is 3,400 meters above sea level. Under these circumstances, even at 0 deg C, it can feel surprisingly warm. The thin air combined with sunshine unfiltered by atmosphere is the reason. Unfortunately, we cannot predict the what the weather will be like very far in advance, especially in the mountains. So the day you go, it could be overcast with a howling wind, and that 0 deg C will feel like -10 deg C.

You may find sports shops in the mountains that can rent you heavier coats. I had to do exactly that 10 years ago when I left my ski jacket on the train.
