Which route is more scenic? We are going to be in Lucerne for 2 nights, then travel to Lauterbrunnen for 2 nights, and end in Menaggio for 2 nights. It seems like it's easiest to go back up to Lucerne from Lauterbrunnen and take the William Tell Express to get to Menaggio. Alternatively, it looks like we could go from Lauterbrunnen down to Visp, then catch part of the Glacier Express, then go down to Lugano to get to Menaggio. Is this second option feasible / worth it? Ideally we'd like to not have to double back to Lucerne on the same route.
The SBB Mobile app and Rome2Rio both calculate that routing through Luzern is an hour shorter (not trying to catch any particular scenic trains). Also, they both select Milano for the southern route rather than go through Lugano.
- 6:22 Lauterbrunnen -> Interlaken -> Luzern -> Lugano -> Menaggio
- 7:22 Lauterbrunnen -> Interlaken -> Spiez -> Brig -> Milano -> Lugano -> Menaggio
- 8:30 Lauterbrunnen -> Interlaken -> Brig -> Andermatt -> Lugano -> Menaggio
You might not want to go south near Zermatt but not stop there too. Returning to Luzern avoids that temptation.
The William Tell Express starts as a 3 hour boat ride to Fluelen, which you won't have done.
